Ms. Wood is a fabulous interior designer and gave us the huge compliment and honor of working for her in her own home. She had a dining room with an Acoustic (popcorn) texture ceiling, which had a previous repair that did not turn out very well. Ms. Wood called us for a consultation and we gave her two options. 1. We could scrape and sand the two areas where the repair was made. Reapply acoustic and blend it in so the repair would be unnoticeable {we have done this several times before with great success!} 2. Remove, sand and "skim coat the ceiling to make the acoustic be completely unnoticeable and gone! Ms Wood chose the second option, complete removal of the acoustic texture, of which she and her husband are not great fans. We also were requested to repaint the walls in the same room. We arrived and first masked the trim that was not to be painted. We arranged butyl backed (plastic on one side, cloth on the other in orderr to absorb and protect any paint drops when they hit the floor) we also hung plastic on the area where the room opened up to the rest of the home. We knew that the dust from sanding would travel throughout the house and we wanted to minimize the mess. After we felt the room was suffienctly protected and enclosed, we remove all outlet covers, and switch covers. Covered the outlets and switches with a piece of masking tape (in order to protect them from paint). We then proceeded to repair any nail pops and moving cracks in the walls and start the removal of the acoustic texture. To remove the and minimize the acoustic texture, we first scraped an area with putty knives to remove as much as possible> this was with a lot of "elbow grease" because the ceiling was previously painted and resistant to removal. Usually most acoustic texture can be scraped off relatively easily; this was not the case with this ceiling. We then used quarter sheet palm sanders with 80 grit sandpaper to smooth the rest of the texture down as much as we possibly could accomplish. The next step in the process was "skim coating" with light weight joint compound. This is a process where we apply a thin coat of joint compound to even out the imperfections and "bumpiness" of the popcorn. After the skim coated areas dried overnight we lightly "pole sand" a process where the piece of sandpaper is attached to a disc on the end of a an extension pole and we lightly sand the ceiling (we also pole sanded the walls) to remove any excess compound and inspect to see if at any additional compound needs to be applied to even out rough or lighter areas. After the second coat was dry, additional pole sanding to smooth and then we applied Sherwin Williams Builders Solution System Interior Primer Surfacer primer by airless sprayer to the ceiling and walls. Builders Solution Interior Surfacer- Fills and surfaces rough and uneven new drywall construction- Uniforms various porosities between drywall paper and joints- Ensures the finish coat will be a smooth and uniform sheen- Minimizes minor surface imperfections: paper fuzz, minor sanding grooves, nicks, and pinholes. This product helps us attain if an exact level 5 finish look pretty close to one! After the primer has dried we then applied with roller and brush 2 coats of Sherwin Williams MasterHide, flat finish paint to the ceiling and 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Pro 200 low sheen paint to the walls. JO Wood being Jo Wood, her color choice (which turned out great) was to have the ceiling paint 'lighted by 50% of the color recipe for the walls. In essence we used the same paint selection but with slightly different tints. The ceiling is not white and when you look at the pictures you would be hard pressed to think they are not but the compliment to the room and the rich feeling gives it is outstanding. After we completed the rooms, cleaned up removed all masking and replaced all outlet and switch plate covers Jo was a very happy homeowner!
